Brooklyn, NY -- Soulive's spring tour in support of their ninth studio album, Rubber Soulive, is in full swing. The cross-country jaunt stops at Wonder Ballroom in Portland, OR on Tuesday, May 17.

The Brooklyn-based soul-funk trio recently released Rubber Soulive, a tribute to The Beatles, which went to no. 1 on the iTunes jazz chart. The 11-track collection features Soulive's inimitable interpretations of Fab Four classics like "In My Life," "Eleanor Rigby" and "I Want You (She's So Heavy)." The band cut the album at their recording facility, Playonbrother Studios, and released the effort through their own label, Royal Family Records. After a series of albums on major labels that experimented with guest vocalists, DJs and horn sections, Rubber Soulive signals a return to the band's roots with founding members Eric Krasno, Neal Evans and Alan Evans front and center and all operations under their own roof.

In other Soulive news, the band kicked-off 2011 with a ten-night stand at Brooklyn Bowl in March dubbed Bowlive. The second annual residency found the band playing host to the likes of special guests including Questlove, John Scofield, Robert Randolph, Bernie Worrell, Van Hunt, Marco Benevento and Corey Glover among numerous others. The two week run coincided with the release of the previous year's highlights on a DVD entitled Bowlive: Live At Brooklyn Bowl.

It is with great excitement that we announce the third edition of Strut's long running series Nigeria 70, compiled again by series curator Duncan Brooker. Sweet Times continues to spotlight fresh tunes that have never been issued outside of Nigeria, in this case delving deeper into traditional styles such as Highlife and Juju, and their intersection with Western influence. Strut announce the return of their pioneering ‘Nigeria 70’ compilation series with an exclusive new third volume: ‘Sweet Times: Afro Funk, Highlife & Juju from 1970s Lagos’ compiled again by series curator Duncan Brooker. Excavating another choice batch of rare grooves from Nigeria’s label archives, the new edition places the spotlight on some of the deeper fusions happening across the country during the 1970s as traditional guitar highlife blended with jazz and funk, hypnotic juju grooves became more progressive and young Nigerian bands came through with their own heavy West African take on U.S. soul, funk, disco and rock.

As on the previous Nigeria 70 volumes, all of the featured selections are previously unissued outside of Nigeria. Tracks range from the dynamite big band workout of Alex Ringo’s Moneyman & The Super 5 International to the Congolese guitar-drenched ‘Henrietta’ by the late Ali Chukwumah, former member of Stephen Osita Osadebe’s Sound Makers. Darker psych grooves from Don Isaac Ezekiel sit alongside raw college funk from college band Tabanaku comprising students from the University Of Ife. Highlife legend Victor Olaiya unleashes a slow, languorous Afro jam lifted from a rare Polydor 45 and juju legend Ebenezer Obey cooks up a lilting, deeply beautiful mid-tempo groove from 1970 in a musical plea for peace. ‘Nigeria 70: Sweet Times’ is another essential celebration of the glut of incredible music that surfaced in post-independence Nigeria.

This is the third edition in the acclaimed Nigeria 70 series. The first volume, released in 2001, was the first compilation of its kind to explore in depth the myriad of funk and soul fusions emerging from Nigeria during the 1970s. Strut followed this with a second edition, ‘Nigeria 70: Lagos Jump’, in 2008.

‘Nigeria 70” Sweet Times’ is compiled by Duncan Brooker and features extensive sleeve notes by John Collins, author of ‘West African Pop Roots’.

Following the recent announcement of the superb new self-titled studio album by Detroit guitar legend, Dennis Coffey, Strut will be accompanying the release with an exclusive 45 issue for this year’s Record Store Day featuring one digital-only track from the album and a brand new remix by producer legend, Steinski.

The release reinforces the strong, long-standing link between Coffey’s music and the world of hip hop – Coffey originals like ’Scorpio’ and ’Taurus’ have become bona fide breakbeat staples sampled by many, from Blackalicious to LL Cool J. And Steinski is cemented in hip hop history as one of the most important cut-up DJ / producers of all time, unleashing the seminal ’Lessons’ cut-up series alongside Double Dee in 1983/4 – the break from Coffey’s ’Scorpio’ appeared in the last of these mixes, ’Lesson 3.’ Steinski would later touch the national charts with Kennedy assassination broadcast-sampling ’The Motorcade Sped On.’ More recently, he has recorded for Ninja Tune and has worked on various soundtrack projects for TV and ads.

For this new 45, Steinski tackles an instrumental track from the ’Dennis Coffey’ album sessions, ’Ubiquitous.’ The original version, also featured here, is a pulsing breakbeat chugger true to the style of Coffey’s ’70s instrumental work on Sussex Records. Steinski re-works the track subtly, re-arranging the guitar ad organ parts and allowing the riffs to simmer on a shuffling, funky backbeat. Copies are strictly limited.

Orchestre Poly-Rythmo To Release "Cotonou Club" Their First Studio Album In Over Twenty Years

The greatest band in Benin’s history, Orchestre Poly-Rythmo, is back. After a year of illustrious comeback live dates including New York’s Lincoln Center, WOMAD festival and Barbican London, the band releases its first studio album in over twenty years, Cotonou Club, on Strut / Sons D’Ailleurs in March 2011.

Produced in Paris entirely on vintage analogue studio equipment, this new album refreshes Poly-Rythmo classics such as "Gbeti Madjro" (featuring Angelique Kidjo) alongside a firing selection of brand new compositions. The album also features a special bonus track, an exclusive collaboration between Poly Rythmo and Franz Ferdinand’s musicians. The mighty orchestre embark on an album launch tour in Europe during April 2011.
